"Getting Even"

The song is about wanting to punish yourself for mistakes you've made in the past. It's about wanting to "get even" and quell the embarrassment and shame you feel about the people you've been in past lives. It's ironic though because in trying to punish yourself, you end up cycling back into the behaviors that made you feel so bad about who you are to begin with. The song was also an artistic response to (Sandy) Alex G's "Proud." I heard that song and was like, "shit, I have to try and write a song that strong." I think it's important for artists to try and respond to art with art. Whether you like something or don't like something, you've been gifted with this extra medium for communicating your feelings with or against other artists and the outside world. I guess I was a little jealous of his song, so I wrote this one.
